  • You want to build a square base using 2x4s. You will build the base using these boards accustomed to your dogs size.
  • Once you have created the base with the 2×4’s, you are going to want to cover the base with plywood. You want to match the edges of the plywood with the base.
  • Once you have lined up the plywood with the base, you are going to want to nail the plywood down along the edges.

The second step how to build a dog house is to construct and attach the four walls of the doghouse. This is one of the harder parts of building the doghouse but these steps should make it simple.

  • You are going to want to use 2x4s to construct the side and rear walls of the doghouse. Make sure you include a stud to support the weight of the roof once it is applied.
  • The front wall frame should be constructed out of 2×4 frames, without the studs so you have room to build the entrance.
  • Next you want to use a jigsaw to cut a hole in the front frame for the dog to be able to enter the doghouse. This hole should be appropriate for your dogs size, leaving plenty of room between the door and your dog skin.

The third step to building a doghouse is to construct the roof frame. This frame should be done using 2×4’s and about six rafters. The roofing frame should be similar to that of a house and using 2x4s for in between the rafters. The next step after nailing the roof to the doghouse is to shingle the roof. The shingles should have a 1 inch overhang off the side of the doghouse to protect your dog from weather conditions.

The final step is customizing the doghouse. You may want to paint the doghouse to add some color. Some owners even prefer to add a gold nameplate to their doghouse to create a sense of ownership for their dog.
